Walking on Achill Island

 

 

Achill Island is a haven to walkers of all levels. We have maps and guides for walks of all grades and walking abilities.

From the simple loop walk right outside our door that brings you along an old trek through the village of Dooagh, where you will see evidence of the old way of Irish Island life from old vegetable stripes on the mountains, wells, Bogs(some of which are still used today) and of course the wild life. This walk brings you to Dooagh Beach where Dolphins are a regular site all year round.

Also from the house you can take the longer route home through the Deserted Village and the Old Fishing Village of Keel. Along this route there is an old costal look-out tower, the deserted village, Slievemore(Achill’s Highest Mountain), Old Cemetery, Megalithic Tombs, Keel Village & Purteen Harbour.

For the more experienced walkers and mountain climbers Achill Island offers you a wonderful days experience in the most heavenly surrounds of mountain, valley, cliffs and coastline.

Regular hill walkers ourselves we can advise you on the best walks and ways on the island’s mountains. You can view the Wild Atlantic Way from the heights of the hills and its worth every minute of the climb

Along the walks you can see the  penal Altar from penal times  ,Beehive huts dated to 16th century ,Boley houses going back to the famine times .On a clear day with good visibility  Croagh Patrick and the Twelve PIns in Connemara can be observed .You must experience it to believe it.

Achill West Coast House also offers drying room facilities for walking guest. We can also supply packed lunches when pre-booked and supply you with maps and guides on the areas walks.
